About PGG Eggs
Where do our eggs come from?
Our eggs come from chickens who forage in the woods every day as a flock. We have a variety of breeds of chicken (for more on each breed check out the "Meet the Animals" page) which means we have a variety of egg colors and sizes.
Our eggs are collected from the coop the day they were laid - the ultimate farm fresh eggs! Since they came straight from the coop, they may have some debris or other schmutz on them. Wash the eggs directly before using them.
Why haven't my eggs been washed?
Your eggs have not been washed because, in addition to their shell, eggs have a natural coating called a cuticle which protects the egg from bacteria and has an array of antimicrobial properties. Washing removes the cuticle and starts the clock ticking–after washing, eggs can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Unwashed eggs last up to three months in the refrigerator. Once an egg has been refrigerated, it must stay refrigerated. Otherwise bacteria can enter the egg when it “sweats.”
Check out this website for helpful information on how to tell if eggs are fresh, what egg labels really mean ("cage-free" vs. "free range" vs. "pasture-raised") and other important info: urbanfarmie.com/egg-labels/
